VLA61 Monarch Chair by Carl Hansen & Son
The VLA61 Monarch Chair was designed by Vilhelm Lauritzen in 1944, and only ten chairs were originally produced. The chair has a poetic design, functionalist details and an elegant interplay between soft upholstery and the carefully hand-polished frame. Available in several variants.
A sculptural masterpiece
Vilhelm Lauritzen was a pioneer of Danish modernism and known as the master of details. With his functionalist approach, he insisted that form must complement function. This is particularly evident in the poetic VLA61 Monarch Chair, exemplified by the double-curved armrests, the organic design of the frame and the elegant brass feet. Additionally, the VLA61 Monarch Chair is so comfortable that sitting in it feels like an embrace.Lauritzen's keen interest in butterflies is reflected in the name of the VLA61 Monarch Chair, inspired by the majestic monarch butterfly. In collaboration with Vilhelm Lauritzen Architects, the chair has been reborn with a contemporary perspective on material composition as well as details, and each chair is the product of hours of passionate craftsmanship. All parts are polished by hand several times, and the top rail is only upholstered when the chair is assembled in order to achieve a perfect finish. All these subtleties help highlight the sculptural expression of Lauritzen's recreated masterpiece.
