CH163 Sofa by Carl Hansen & Son
Hans J. Wegner designed the CH163 Sofa in 1965 using a down filling to achieve a soft comfort. This 3-person wood based sofa exemplifies how Wegner often highlighted functional details by making them decorative.
Comfortable sofa with raised sides and striking details
Hans J. Wegner demonstrates with CH163 how even a small detail can be so important that it becomes a special feature of the furniture. In this case, the special feature is the enlarged cover caps in the armrests which conceal the screws in the upper part of the characteristically shaped legs that hold the armrest upholstery to the wooden frame. The wooden cap is made larger for decorative reasons, moved slightly back from the front of the legs and placed so that the grain is moving in the transversal direction of the leg's grains. The sofa's solid wooden frame is firmly upholstered. The cushions in the seat and back are loose and soften the otherwise straight lines of the sofa. The idea of using down wrapping a foam core in a sofa enabled Wegner to add pleasant comfort to a mostly tight form. The sofa is available as the two seater CH162 and the three seater CH163.
